Obligations
of Noyce Scholars:
- The scholar
agrees to continuous full-time enrollment as an undergraduate student in a
University of Arizona major compatible with the College of Science Mathematics
or Science Teacher Preparation Programs (summer school enrollment is not required).
- The scholar
will sign a binding agreement to teach two years at a high needs middle or
high school for every year of support awarded by the Noyce Scholarship Program
after successful completion of the University of Arizona degree and teacher
certification. Failure to complete this obligation within 6 years of graduating
from the University of Arizona science or mathematics teacher program will
result in default and the award will have to be repaid.
- The scholar
will participate in a beginning teacher support program during the first two
years of teaching in a local high needs school.
To
apply for the Noyce Scholars Program you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
or permanent resident.
- Second year
or higher undergraduate status with at least three semesters of coursework
in science or mathematics completed at Pima Community College or the University
of Arizona.
- Have a current
cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and a major GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- A desire to
become a teacher of science or mathematics in a middle or high school classified
by the NSF as a high-needs school.
- Evidence of
potential for success as a teacher from reference letters.
- Good written
and verbal communication skills.
- Complete and
submit a current online (preferably) FAFSA.
- Complete and
submit the online Noyce Scholars Application form, including a one-page personal
statement that describes the following:
- your reasons
for wanting to become a science or math teacher
- your philosophy
about teaching and learning
- your personal
characteristics or experiences that you believe are compatible with a potential
to become a good teacher.
- Solicit and
send via mail a minimum of two letters of recommendation from instructors,
professors, or teachers that you have had in college (see link for Information
for References).
- Send via mail
a copy of an unofficial transcript from each college that you have attended.
Preferred
Qualifications (not required)
- Member of an
underrepresented cultural group in science and mathematics.
- Financial need.
